This work is part of a series titled 333. The series contains three projects that each deal in triptychs, triads, and trilogies. While ranging in subject matter specifically, the projects each feature explorations of medium specificity in digital video. Methods of digital seeing, cinematic time versus reality, and thoughts on modernity as viewed through the lens of video are dissected across three multi-work projects that each triangulate to reveal a central narrative.

Texas Triptych

2023

Texas Triptych is a set of three film works remixed by frame and individual pixel. Using a combination of Python and Javascript, each frame of each film is stripped away to an individual image, then reorganized by comparing pixels to their neighbors. The image's pixels are resorted vertically by brightness and horizontally by hue, then reassembled as frames and placed back in their original order. The resulting works alter the meaning and impact of the original film while still presenting the same (albeit rearranged) information. I am interested in these works as transmutative extractions of the qualities and aesthetics of provocative media. I consider them exorcisms of content, anesthetizations of cultural meaning, while forming aesthetic revisualizations and new works from the rebuilt components. Though the audio is stripped from each work, I offer a resorting of each audio track below. This remixed audio may be played in conjunction with, or separated from, the visual content for differing effects.

Texas Triptych - Audio

Though the audio tracks have been stripped from each of the visual pieces above, I offer a supplemental remixing of the tracks to stand separate from the visual works, or to accompany them to differing effect. In each track, each "frame" of audio has been sorted by amplitude in a gradient ramp from low to high.

Note: While the Zapruder film is silent, the recordings of the film footage are often accompanied by the whirring sound of the projector reel. These sounds are reorganized here.
